Beginning Saturday, March 24, 2007, I'll be posting weekly installments of George Lippard's The Quaker City;
or, the Monks of Monk Hall, a novel first serialized in 1844-45, then expanded and published in novel form in
1845. I have taken this online version from the expanded edition, reprinted in Philadelphia by Leary, Stuart &
Company, 1876. I also check my text against the 1995 reprint of Quaker City, edited by David S. Reynolds.
I will also annotate the novel, but this will be an ongoing process, the notes accruing over time as I research.
Each Sunday, I'll post a new chapter or so (depending upon length). The complete serialization should take
about a year. I'll post information and news on The Quaker City Blog.
I'll be working on a short bio of Lippard over the next few months. Until then, for more info about this
fascinating Philadelphia writer, check out my cover story in the Philadelphia City Paper's Spring Book
Monks, Devils and Quakers
The lurid life and times of George Lippard, Philadelphia's original best-selling author.
